Frequently asked questions.
1. What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
BJJ is a grappling-based martial art focusing on ground fighting and submissions. It emphasizes technique and leverage, allowing individuals to control and submit opponents regardless of size or strength.
2. Do I need to be in shape before starting?
No prior fitness level is required. BJJ training will naturally improve your strength, flexibility, and endurance over time.
3. Is BJJ safe for beginners?
Yes, safety is a top priority. Classes are conducted in a controlled environment with an emphasis on proper technique and awareness to minimize injuries.
4. What should I wear to my first class?
For Gi classes, a traditional BJJ gi (kimono) is recommended. For No-Gi classes, athletic shorts and a rash guard or fitted t-shirt are suitable. Ensure your attire is clean and allows for a full range of movement.
5. Do I need any equipment to start?
Initially, just comfortable athletic wear is sufficient. As you progress, investing in a gi, mouthguard, and other protective gear is advisable.
6. Is there striking in BJJ?
Traditional BJJ does not involve strikes. It focuses on grappling techniques, making it safer for live sparring and suitable for self-defense scenarios.
7. How long does it take to earn a belt?
Progression varies per individual. Consistent training, dedication, and mastery of techniques contribute to belt advancements, which typically occur over several years.
8. Am I too old to start BJJ?
Absolutely not. BJJ is suitable for all ages, and many practitioners start later in life, finding it beneficial for both physical and mental well-being.
9. Do I have to compete?
Competition is optional. Many students train for fitness, self-defense, or personal growth without ever entering a tournament.
10. What are the benefits of training BJJ?
BJJ offers numerous benefits, including improved fitness, stress relief, increased confidence, and a supportive community environment.
11. What if I have my own gi, but it has another academy's logos on it?
No problem at all. At Triune, we don’t care what gi you wear — even if it’s loud as hell or repping another gym. As long as it’s clean and you’re here to train, you’re welcome on the mats.
12. What’s the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
In Gi classes, you wear a traditional kimono (gi), and many techniques involve gripping the fabric for control and submissions. In No-Gi, you wear athletic gear like shorts and a rash guard, and the grips are based on body control rather than clothing. Both styles teach similar principles, just with different applications — and both are part of what we train at Triune.
13. I’m a woman — is BJJ right for me?
Absolutely. BJJ is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense and body awareness, especially for women. It’s all about leverage and technique, not size or strength. At Triune, you’ll find a welcoming, ego-free environment where women train just as hard as anyone else — and you’ll be supported every step of the way.
